LTC Regis Harrington, Jr.
Augusta, GA – Lt. Colonel Regis A. Harrington, Jr. entered into rest on Friday, September 9, 2016 after suffering years with lung problems. Born in November of 1933 to Regis and Emma Harrington in Cedar Falls, Iowa. At the age of 6, as an alter boy at Sacred Heart Church, he found his deep love for his Creator.
Colonel Harrington was preceded in death by his first wife of 55 years, Charlotte Ann Harrington, son, Steven, and daughter, Patricia. He grew up in Oelwein, Iowa and was a graduate of the State University of Iowa. In college, he was active in ROTC and was named a Colonel in the Pershing Rifles Society. Having received a commission in the Infantry, he attended the Officers Basic Course in Ft. Benning, GA in April 1957, as a Second Lieutenant. Afterward he was a Platoon Leader in the 18th Infantry.
He received a Regular Army Commission in the Signal Corps as an Army Aviator, qualified in fixed and rotary wing. He was a Company Commander in Germany and twice in Vietnam. For 2 years he was a member of the Iowa National Guard and was recalled during the Berlin Crisis. His awards include Master Aviator, Meritorious Medal, Bronze Star with 2 clusters, Air Medal with 4 clusters, and 6 Army Commendation Medals.
Colonel Harrington served as Battalion Commander of the 2nd Training Battalion at Ft. Gordon, GA and resigned as Signal Officer of Fort Jackson, SC in April 1997 after 23 years of service. After that he operated a screen printing and embroidery business known as Harrington’s Sportswear for 27 years in Augusta, GA.
Survivors include his wife: Paula Rae Harrington; sons: Regis Harrington, III of Melbourne, FL, Dennis Harrington of Martinez, GA, and Robert Harrington of Savannah, GA; eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
A Mass of Resurrection will be Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church with Fr. Michael Roverse Celebrant. Burial will follow in Westover Memorial Park with Military Honors.
