Surrounded by the love of her family, Lurla Ann (Griffith) Mayne, 87, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 10, 2024.
Born in Peoria, IL to Louise and Joseph Griffith, Lurla was raised in a loving environment where she learned to demonstrate compassion for those in need. She carried this lesson throughout her life, always seeking to help others and bring justice to the world in any way she could.
After a mutual friend introduced her to Richard “Dick” Mayne, she immediately knew that he was the man she would share her life with. They married in Peoria, Illinois on October 19, 1958, and moved to the Chicago suburbs to begin their life together. Early in their marriage they were introduced to South Park Church in Park Ridge, IL, where she dedicated her life to Christ and made life-long friends.
In the early years of her marriage, she worked as a Registered Nurse, teaching medical professionals and caring for patients at Evanston Hospital in Evanston, Illinois. She and Dick raised two daughters in Park Ridge, instilling in them the same enthusiasm for life and love for others that she had learned as a little girl.
Lurla and Dick moved to Augusta, Georgia for work in 1983, where she quickly integrated into the community and found a new circle of friends. They joined the Augusta Sailing Club and Wesley Methodist Church, where she served the church and community through numerous ministries. She also worked as an office manager serving the patients and staff at Augusta Dental Associates.
A devoted and enthusiastic mother to her two daughters, Lurla also loved being grandma to her three grandchildren, with whom she developed strong bonds. Spending as much time as possible with her children and grandchildren was a primary joy and focus of her life.
In addition to the time she devoted to her family, Lurla had a full and busy life with a wide range of interests. She loved puzzles, games, cards, books, travel, sailing, swimming, the beach and lake, bowling, camping, sewing, and hiking. She was a devoted sports fan, rarely missing a game of her beloved Atlanta Braves. A true life-long learner, she relished digging into the history behind her interests and activities, including the sights and locations of her many trips with Dick. She would meticulously document each trip with photos, facts, and memorabilia so she could remember and savor every detail.
While her family and many close friends were her joy in life, she also had a heartfelt compassion for the needs of those around her. She spread joy and laughter wherever she went, making true friends along the way. She will be missed by the residents at Brandon Wilde, including the swimming ladies and the Wii bowling team; her three book clubs; Wesley Methodist Church and the Pathways class; the “Rowdy Girls”; and the sailors at Clarks Hill Lake.
Lurla will be missed by her husband of 65 years, Richard “Dick” Mayne, daughters Jeanine Parker (Kerry) and Joanne Cirincione (Larry), grandchildren Daniel Cirincione (Madison), Laura Griffin (Jay), and Michael Moeller, sisters-in-law Barbara Klein (Joel) and Barbara Griffith, niece Susan Jaegle and nephew Tom Griffith.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in memory of Lurla to The Innocence Project to support those unjustly convicted (innocenceproject.org/donate/) or to Wesley Methodist Church Missions. Both are fitting tributes to Lurla’s life and passions.
A memorial service will be held at Wesley Methodist Church (825 North Belair Road, Evans, Georgia) on Saturday, March 2nd at 2:00 pm.
