M. Bert Storey
Augusta, GA - Mr. Mallie Bert Storey of Augusta, Georgia, entered into eternal rest Friday, April 27, 2018 at his residence surrounded by family.
Bert Storey was born June 10, 1929 in Columbia, South Carolina and spent his youth growing up in Eastover, SC. He was the son of the late Jimmie Sanford Storey, Sr. and Pensacola Haithcock Storey. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Jimmie Sanford Storey, Jr. of Columbia, SC and his sister, Jeanette Storey Parker of North Augusta, SC.
Bert was also predeceased by his loving wife of 44 years, Mrs. Barbara Nan Langley Storey. They shared a life of devotion to one another and to their children and grandchildren. Bert is survived by his children: Barry Langley Storey (Beth) of Augusta and Nan Storey Easterlin (Ed) of Atlanta. He was especially proud of his five grandchildren: Shelby Storey Blackburn (Barrett), Barry Langley (Lang) Storey, Jr., Mallie Nan Easterlin, Edward (Ward) Downs Easterlin, Jr. and Clara Amelia Easterlin. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their families.
A 1951 graduate of the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering, Bert enjoyed a long and active business career complimented by his generous charitable giving philosophy. Upon graduation from college, Bert served in the Army and was based at the Presidio in San Francisco. His business career began in his teenage years when he worked at his family’s general store next door to his home. After his post college Army service, Bert worked as a Division Engineer for E. I. Du Pont De Nemours and Company and as the Manager of the Construction Division of Jones and Fellers Architects and Engineers in Augusta. In 1972, he established Bert Storey Development Corporation which served as the parent corporation over his commercial brokerage division, Bert Storey Associates and his retail development business, Sunstates Development Group.
Throughout his business career, Bert served and supported his church, alma mater, and community. He was a longtime devoted member of First Baptist Church of Augusta where he served for many years as a Deacon, Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and on numerous committees. He is past Vice Chairman of the University of South Carolina College of Engineering and Information Technology Policy Board and Past President of the Augusta Board of Realtors. Additionally, he served on the boards of numerous civic organizations.
In 2002, he was named a Distinguished Alumnus of the University of South Carolina, and in 2010 he received along with his son Barry, the Outstanding Philanthropist Award from the Greater Augusta Chapter of Fundraising Professionals. For his transformational gifts to Augusta University, he received the university’s highest honor, The President’s Award in 2016. In addition, he was awarded the Book of Golden Deeds Award from the Exchange Club of Augusta in 2017. As a tribute to the many lives Bert touched with his quiet philanthropic endeavors, so named is the University of South Carolina’s M. Bert Storey Engineering and Innovation Center and the M. Bert Storey Research Building at the Georgia Cancer Center. However, he was most proud of the Storey Chapel at First Baptist Church of Augusta which was named in loving memory of his late wife, Barbara.
Following a private family burial service at Westover Memorial Park, the funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at First Baptist Church of Augusta. Officiating will be Dr. Timothy L. Owings, Dr. Rodger B. Murchison, and the Rev. Will W. Dyer, Jr. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be members of the Crusaders Sunday School Class. The family will receive friends Monday evening April 30 at the Storey Chapel from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.
