Mackie Hodge

Augusta, GA – Mr. Mackie Hodge, 81 years of age, passed away Wednesday, at his home. Mackie was the youngest of ten children born to his late parents, Mack and Lula Sweat Hodge. In addition to his parents he was pre-deceased by all of his siblings. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ruth Sikes Hodge, to whom he was married for over 60 years.

Mackie grew up in Coffee County and graduated from Nicholls High School in 1949. After attending college in Mt. Vernon, GA, he married Ruth and entered the United States Air Force. He served in the military for more than 27 years. During this time he was blessed with two daughters, Carol and Angela and with two sons, Gregory (Christina) of Rincon, GA and Phillip. In addition to his wife and children, he leaves behind three granddaughters: Jamie, Mary Ann (Phil) and Beth; three great granddaughters: Rebekka and Caitlyn of NJ and Sarah Ann. Mackie’s remaining family members include four sisters-in-law: Ruby Cubbedge, Virginia Callaway, Faye Cardell and Marilyn Sikes; two brothers-in-law: Leon Cardell and Anson Callaway, all from South Georgia. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

When he retired from the USAF in 1979 Mackie moved his family to Augusta. It was generally known that he was a “Jack-of-All-Trades”. The only thing broader than his skill set was his sense of humor. To those who knew him, it was obvious that he was a Christian.

Mackie was a dedicated husband and father who treasured friendships, loved life and appreciated simple pleasures such as fishing, carpentry, vegetable gardening and property maintenance for himself and his grown children. Fiercely independent and self-reliant, he devoted his whole adult life to taking care of his wife and children, helping his extended family as well as serving his country.
