He was a resident of the Augusta area since1963. He was an active member in various parishes as the city grew, Sacred Heart, Holy Trinity and a founding member of St. Teresa of Avila.
A native of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, he was born December 16, 1919, to Francis William Scholly and Thelma Heilman Scholly. At age 14, his family moved to Washington, DC where he then graduated from Eastern High School where he was a Captain in the core of Cadets. He was later employed in the US Naval Gun Factory. He married Helen Rose Cunningham of Clinton, Iowa in Washington, DC on November 4, 1942 and in 1944, he volunteered for military service. After basic training, he attended the Infantry Officers’ Candidate School at Fort Benning, GA. Following his commissioning he was assigned to then Camp Gordon and its Replacement Training Center.
He later served 2 tours in Germany, including Dachau after the liberation, Okinawa, Alaska and numerous posts and schools in the United States. After retiring from the Army, he began a new career as an advertising writer and announcer at radio station WFNL and later, WJBF-TV. Bill Scholly is perhaps best remembered as host of the “Good Morning Augusta” program and the “Community Calendar”, in which he gave a daily rundown of activities scheduled for the Augusta area, spicing up the announcements with humorous tongue-twisting adjectives from his vast knowledge of the English language.
Bill Scholly was a kind, honest and humble man, a true gentleman with a witty sense of humor. He was very well-read and loved history. He had beautiful voice and loved to sing in church, with the Barbershop Chorus and around the piano with friends at Brandon Wilde.
