Marianna Berniece Caput
Augusta, GA – Ms. Marianna B. Caput, 77, of Martinez, GA, loving wife of 56 years to William G. Caput, M.D., peacefully entered into eternal rest on June 15, 2014, after a short illness at Georgia Regents University Medical Center. She was surrounded by her family.
Living family members in addition to her husband include sons: Robert B. Caput (Margaret); John W. Caput (Holly); brother: William Whelan (Judy); and a grandson: Bryan Caput. She is preceded in death by her son, James M. Caput.
Marianna Caput was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1937 to her parents, John and Kathryn Whelan. She attended Coolie High School and followed in her mother’s footsteps graduating from Wayne State University/Harper Hospital Nursing Program as a registered nurse in 1958.
Although following her husband all over the world for 25 years as a military wife, she continued to practice nursing at every opportunity, whether in a hospital, as a school nurse or in a clinic. She retired from Doctor’s Hospital as a registered nurse a number of years ago. Despite her retirement, she continued nursing in a charitable capacity for many years as a volunteer nurse at Eisenhower Medical Center, Hospice, Harrisburg Clinic and on many multi-denominational medical mission trips to Mexico with her husband.
She loved nursing and was a generous person; she helped finance the education of a nursing student in Mexico and supported a missionary nurse in Guatemala. Marianna loved her Sunday School Class at Trinity on the Hill United Methodist Church; her greatest love, however, was supporting “Super Saturday”, an outreach program for adults with special needs sponsored by her Church.
Marianna was an accomplished artist-painting in both oils and water colors. She enjoyed reading, traveling, playing golf, bridge and spending time with family. She adored her grandson Bryan and so looked forward to his visits. She maintained frequent contact with a pen-pal in Paris for over 60 years and opened her home to countless foreign officers and their families during her 25 years as an Army wife.
Marianna requested no flowers, but memorial contributions may be made to Trinity on the Hill United Methodist Church, 1330 Monte Sano Avenue, Augusta, GA 30904 designated to support the “Super Saturday Program”.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 28, 2014, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Thomas Poteet & Son. A memorial service will be held in the chapel of Thomas Poteet on Sunday, June 29 at 2:00 PM with Dr. Mike Cash officiating. Burial will follow at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA.
