Our beloved Martha LouEllen Harrell went home to be with the Lord early morning on February 15, 2025. Affectionately known as “Big Mama” (even though she was only 4’11”)...this wonderful matriarch of the Harrell family touched so many lives during her 95 years. Born July 8, 1929 in Aiken, SC, she moved many times within the states of South Carolina and Georgia. She was a graduate of Savannah High School before moving to Augusta.
Along the way she was employed as an Operator for Southern Bell before moving employment to the A&P in Augusta, Ga for the next 35 years as a bookkeeper and Head Cashier in several stores here in Augusta.
After retiring from the A&P, she opened a dress shop off Washington Road for a short time before working for Miracle Ear in Regents Mall. She also obtained her Real Estate license and sold properties in Columbia County. However, her love for people rose in her heart and she worked for several years at the Senior Center in Thomson, Ga teaching ceramics and crafts.
She is preceded in death by husband: Chief JB Harrell Jr. of the Richmond County Fire Department, daughter: Theresa Ann Harrell; son: Lloyd Edward Harrell; mother: Ellen Stiefel; brother: Thomas H. Sharpe; grandson: Timothy Harrell, and Grandson Lloyd (Lee) Harrell and daughter-in-law: Regina West Harrell.
She is survived by sons: JB Harrell III (wife Jill) of Grovetown GA, Giles (Tommy) Harrell (wife Millie) of Augusta GA and Dale J. Harrell of Grovetown GA; grandchildren: Joseph B. Harrell IV (wife Dehlia) of Evans GA, Christopher M. Harrell (wife Tammy) of Rock Springs GA, Robert T. Harrell (wife Jocelyn) of Marrietta GA, Theresa Bertolone (husband Perry) of Evans GA, Giles T. Harrell Jr of Wilmington OH, Gregory M. Harrell (wife Mindy), and Jennifer E. Giles (husband Dennis) of Evans GA; and 15 Great Grandchildren and 5 Great-Great Grandchildren.
Our special thanks go to the nurses and aides of Helping Hands Hospice in Augusta for giving her such great care in such a kind and respectful manner.
We were all blessed to have this special Angel in our lives.
The funeral will take place on Friday, February 21, 2025 at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors on Davis Road in Augusta GA. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery. Visitation and viewing will be prior to the service from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm. Martha was a long-time member of Abilene Baptist Church in Augusta. Members of her Sunday School class will please the family by serving as Honorary Pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Abilene Baptist Church of Augusta, GA.
