Martha June Simons

Augusta, GA - Martha June Simons formally of Augusta, Georgia entered peacefully into her eternal rest Saturday, December 11, 2021, at Westminster-Canterbury in Lynchburg, Virginia.

June was born April 6, 1932, in Stapleton, Georgia and was the daughter of the late Adger Vincent Clark and Sarah Ruth Logue Clark. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Ralph Jonah Simons and son, Ralph Jonah Simons, Jr. (Jay) as well as her brother, Willis Logue Clark and sister, Alice Beth Clark.

She is survived by her daughter, Jeanna Simons Chapman and her grandchildren, Ralph Jonah Simons, III (Jake) and Lucy Carswell Simons and special family members Robert Randolph Chapman III and Amy Daniel Simons.

June attended the former Georgia State College for Women where she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. After graduation, June moved to Thomson, Georgia to become a 6th grade teacher and there met her husband, Ralph. She returned to her beloved classroom at Wheeless Road School in Augusta, Georgia after raising her two children and remained there until retirement. She maintained her love of children throughout her life and continued to delight them up until her death.

June valued being a wife and mother above all else and continually put the needs of them and others above her own. As her family grew, she took much delight in time together especially at her happy place on Hilton Head Island.

Laughter and fun were a big part of who June was and people of all ages gravitated to her.

Her faith in God was a constant and she modeled that in her walk-through life.

June loved music and loved to sing. In Virginia she often was referred to as the house songbird. Even towards the end of her life, as Alzheimer’s took a significant stronghold, she continued to serenade people with hymns of old.

She lived fully, loved big and cared deeply for her friends and family. She believed that giving of your time and energy was of great importance in life. Luke 12:48 exclaims “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked”.

June spent a lifetime of serving her church, her community and her family, friends and neighbors.

A funeral service and celebration of life will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday December 16, 2021, in the Storey Chapel at First Baptist Church of Augusta. Family will receive friends at 1:00 pm prior to the service in the vestibule. A private family burial at Westover Memorial Park will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, a contribution to Westminster-Canterbury in memory of June’s life can be made to Westminster-Canterbury, 501 V.E.S. Road, Lynchburg, Virginia 24503.
