Martha Newsome Sweat

Augusta, GA – Went to be with the Lord Friday, July 27, 2018, Mrs. Martha Newsome Sweat, 79, loving wife of Edgar M. Sweat.

Martha was a devoted member of Warren Baptist Church where she volunteered in the nursery and was a teacher and active member of her Sunday School Class. She was a passionate educator, teaching at St. Mary’s on the Hill Catholic School. After retiring from a twenty-five-year career at AT&T/Lucent Technologies in Atlanta, she returned to Augusta and taught for the Richmond County Board of Education, often serving children with special needs. Martha was affectionately known by family and friends as “Nanny Max”.

Family members, in addition to her husband, include her daughter: Pat Harris and husband Gerold D. Harris, Sr.; son: Steven Andrew Martin and wife Julia; daughter-in-law: Millie Pereira; dearest cousin: Edith Flynt and husband Tommy; grandchildren: Kam Kyzer, Gerold Dan Harris, Jr., Martha Santiago, Melissa Asher, Marla Mitcham, Ian Martin, and Ryan Martin; great grandchildren: Madison, Ellie, and Jack Kyzer, Lily, Tripp, Ruby and Rebecca Harris, Kent and Mo Asher and Wren Mitcham; kindest stepchildren: Keith Sweat and wife Ellen, Craig Sweat and wife Mindy, Edra Adams and husband Robb. She was preceded in death by her son: Michael David Martin and great-grandson Jeremiah Santiago.

The funeral service will be Monday, August 6, 2018, 11:00 A.M. in the Chapel of Warren Baptist Church with Rev. Dave Dillard officiating and loving grandchildren serving as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 A.M., at the church.
