Marti Smallwood
Augusta, GA – Martha Ann Drake Smallwood(“Marti”), age 78, passed away peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior on July 2nd, 2022. Marti was born in Savannah Georgia to James Thurman Drake and Martha Frances Bohler, but she spent most of her adult life in Augusta. She was married to Llewellyn Smallwood(“Lew”) for over 50 years and had one child Dennis Brian Drake Smallwood.(“Brian”)
Marti was one of the most caring and compassionate persons you would ever meet and would give you the shirt off her back. She obtained her master’s degree in social work from the University of Georgia and was a natural born helper. In her long career with the Department of Family and Children Services she served as a caseworker, supervisor, consultant, foster care worker, adoption worker and trainer. Along the way she influenced and positively impacted more staff, children and families than can be counted. Social work was her passion and her calling. And even after retirement she never stopped caring for others with dignity, respect and compassion.
Marti was also a very spiritual person who lived out her faith every day. Her support of others in their faith journey helped many to cope with life’s events and turn to the lord as a source of strength. For many years she was an active member of Whole Life Ministries and most recently was a member of the Crawford Road Baptist church. Her faith and belief in the Lord were everything to her.
Marti had a number of interests. However, being a mother to her son Brian was clearly one of the most important roles in her life. She also enjoyed travelling and if she had not been limited physically in the past few years would have eagerly jumped on a plane, train or automobile to head somewhere. Thankfully she did get to visit many places both in and out of the United States in earlier years.
Marti is survived by her husband Lew Smallwood (Augusta), her son Brian Smallwood (North Augusta) and her sister Betty Jean Drake (Augusta). She also leaves behind dear friends Bonnie and Paul . (Milledgeville). Her sense of humor, friendship and entire self will be missed terribly by all.
