Mary Elizabeth Anderson Moody

Evans, GA- Mary Moody, 79, the beloved wife of 58 years and high school sweetheart of Bert Moody, adored mother to her three children, and affectionately known as “Ju Ju” by her grandchildren, went peacefully to Heaven July 8, 2023 surrounded by her family. Mary was born in Augusta, GA to the late Dr. Robert Edward and Mary Emma Blanchard Anderson.

Mary loved the Lord with all her heart and served as a wonderful Christian example to all. She graduated from Richmond Academy in 1962 and received a BSED degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Georgia in 1965. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority at UGA, the Junior League of Augusta, and the Augusta Heritage Garden Club. She and her husband founded and managed School Days Supply Co. for 20 years.

Mary’s love of teaching children began at an early age and she never wavered from that love. She taught both public and private schools in Palm Beach Gardens, FL and Richmond County, GA and served as director and kindergarten teacher at First Baptist Church of Augusta, GA. Other services to First Baptist Church included Foreign Missions committee, leader for Girls in Action, children Sunday school teacher, and Backyard Vacation Bible School teacher.

Mary especially enjoyed creative writing and won several awards at regional writing contests. She placed first in the Sand Hill Regional Writers Conference for Children Literature, an event sponsored by Augusta University. She authored a children’s picture book titled, “The Cardboard Box and Me.” Her book was published in 2021 and has been read by children all over the world. She also enjoyed composing hymns on the piano and writing poetry.

The family spent many happy vacations at Pawley’s Island, SC. Some of her most cherished memories included vacationing with family at the beach, mountains and lakes and cruising on the river with family and friends.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her one son Bert (Denise) Moody III, of Boston, MA, two daughters Rachel Sheldon of Richmond, VA and Maryanna (Jay) Thornton of North Augusta, SC. She was blessed with six grandchildren Emily Ellis Osbon, Eliza, and Graham Sheldon, and Liam, McClure, and Beckham Thornton, all of whom she loved dearly. She is survived by two brothers Bobby (Jane) Anderson and Dr. Walter (Jane) Anderson.

Her family wishes to thank the staff at Southeast Hospice for their compassionate care, caregivers Ms. Meaner Turman and Ms. Sollie Harris, and the support of the CSRA Parkinson Support Group.

A memorial service will be held Friday, July 14, 2023 at 2:00 P.M. in the Storey Chapel of First Baptist Church of Augusta, GA with Dr. Rodger Murchison officiating. Caring Co-ed Sunday School Class will be the honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the memorial service in the First Baptist Church Chapel Foyer.
