Mary Frances Walker
Martinez, GA – Mary Frances Walker passed away March 29, 2013 at her home after an extended battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was born on December 27, 1929 in Seneca Falls, NY to the late Salvatore and Pauline LaManna Pennachio. Mrs. Walker retired in 1996 from Federal Civil Service at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL.
Mrs. Walker is preceded in death by her husband, Retired Brigadier General George J. Walker. She is survived by her daughter: Michelle Carnes and husband Reid of Martinez, GA; sons: Scott Walker and Allan Walker. Mrs. Walker’s surviving grandchildren include: Jason Carnes and wife Emily of Bluffton, SC, Laurie Seymour and husband Ryan of Evans, GA, Jeremy Carnes of Martinez, GA, Marlee and Samantha Walker of TX; great-grandchildren: Savannah Seymour and Grayson Carnes. Additionally, Mrs. Walker is survived by sister: Paula Kenny and husband John of Waterloo, NY; brother: Sam Pennachio and wife Liz of Walworth, NY; brother-in-law: Frank Cerza of Seneca Falls, NY. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She is preceded in death by her sister: Antoinette Cerza.
In 1989 when Mary’s husband retired from the United States Army, she was awarded the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal for her extraordinary volunteer contributions to the support and development of family related programs in the United States Army. The citation accompanying the medal stated, “Her work significantly aided the development and enhancement of several key initiatives in the Family Action Area. Mrs. Walker’s concern for the welfare of the Army Family, her interest in programs to support it, and generous contribution of her time and effort have greatly assisted the Army as a whole and provided a lasting example of excellence for others to follow.”
Mary will be remembered as a loving and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother and as one who truly cared about soldiers and their families during her husband’s military career. Mrs. Walker’s remains will be cremated and interred, with those of her husband, at the Columbarium in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA, at a later date.
The family will have a memorial service at her home in Martinez, GA on Monday, April 1 at 6:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Alzheimer’s Association or a favorite charity.
