Mary Jean Aitken

Grovetown, GA – Mrs. Matthew B. Aitken (Mary Jean Cronin), entered into peace Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Matthew Bruce Aitken. She is survived by her children: Matt Aitken and wife Melissa Aitken, Joanne Jessie, Gerald Aitken, Patricia Perry, and Bruce Aitken. Additionally, she is survived by her grandchildren, Travis E. Perry (affectionately he called her Yellow Granny), Bryce Aitken, Rise Aitken, and Cecilia Aitken.

Mary Jean grew up in Massachusetts and graduated from Marymount College in Tarrytown, New York. She was married in 1957 and relocated with her husband, who was in the military, to Augusta, Georgia where she raised her five children.

She loved sports of all kinds but was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Falcons, and Boston College. She loved animals and was a supporter of the Best Friends Animal Society and the Humane Society. She was a supporter of the Brownies and a troop leader for the Girl Scouts. She was very active at St. Mary’s Catholic School on the Hill while her children attended there. The students would remember her as the “mean yard lady”. She also assisted with counting lunch money each week.

In her later years, Mary Jean, along with her husband, attended Wildwood Christian Church in South Augusta. She assisted in the nursery and as a Sunday school teacher. Her fondest memory is playing Zelda for the kids in Sunday School. She will be greatly missed by all of her family, friends, and all of those whose lives she touched.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Thomas Poteet with Dr. Asa Talbot officiating. Burial will follow at Westover Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to Best Friends Animal Society, 5001 Angel Canyon Road, Kanab, UT 84741.

The family will receive friends Friday evening, July 26, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00.
