Augusta, GA. – Mary Louise Darey Dennis died peacefully December 2, 2012 at her Augusta, Georgia home. She was the daughter of the late Judge Edmund Charles Darey and Frances Smith Darey. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at 11:00 am at St. John United Methodist Church with The Reverend Gary DeMore officiating. A family interment will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Macon, Georgia. Mrs. Dennis was born in Livermore Falls, Maine on June 19, 1935. She graduated from Livermore Falls High School as Valedictorian and then from Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts. She continued to Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City where she met Jay Dennis of Macon, Georgia. They married December 21, 1959.
Above all else, Mrs. Dennis was known as a loving and devoted mother to her six boys. However, her enduring commitment to children and to child health extended beyond her family and began most notably in her research with Dr. Virginia Apgar at Columbia University. Mrs. Dennis enjoyed her work with the Junior League of Augusta where she was a sustaining member, and served for many years as Den Leader Coach in Pack 64 of the Cub Scouts of America. She was a leader in the local Boy Scouts of America. At St. John United Methodist Church she was loved as an active member and was involved in children’s’ programs.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Allen J. Dennis; sister, Dr. Frances Nesti of Burlington, VT; and lifelong friend Beatrice Ann Dodd; sons, Dr. Allen J. Dennis III (Terry) of Aiken, SC, Rev. Phillip D. Dennis (Caroline) of Indianapolis, IN, Mr. Norwood R. Dennis (Terry) of Augusta, GA, Dr. Jonathan H. Dennis (Marie) of Tallahassee, FL, Dr. Christopher S. Dennis (Lori) of Boston, MA, and Mr. Graeme E. Dennis of Boston, MA; grandchildren, Lauren, Wood, Helen, Edward, Hannah, Mary Frances, Adelle, Lily, Chloe, Jacob and Julian; and many loving nieces and nephews.
