Evans, GA – Mary Stringer Austin Peebles, entered into rest on her 90th birthday, Sunday, April 26, 2015, at University Hospital. Services will be held on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. at the Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Ron Jones and Rev. Fred Gunter presiding. Graveside services will follow at Westover Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. at Thomas Poteet and Son Funeral Home. Mary was a longtime member of the Hill Baptist Church and was married there in 1942 to William (Bill) Durden Austin, Sr. for 45 years before his death in 1987. She is survived by their seven children: Angie A. Newton (Terry), Augusta, GA, William (Bill) D. Austin Jr., Columbia, SC, Robert (Bob) W. Austin (Charlotte), Augusta, GA, Donna A. Ford (Terry), Augusta, GA, Danita A. Ducey (Tony), Augusta, GA, Daniel (Dan) B. Austin (Lorilee), Grovetown, GA, and Reida A. Schrempp (James), Fletcher, NC. She has 14 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
After graduating from Tubman High School in June 1942, she married two months later in the Hill Baptist Church. She attended Garret Business School and worked for a number of years for Dr. William Joseph Williams, surgeon. Mary lived for her children and their families. She was a kind and caring person and a true homemaker. Mary was an excellent seamstress and while her kids were young she operated a beauty salon in the basement of her home. She also worked for the VA Medical Center, Augusta Technical College, and Canterbury Designs. Mary loved line-dancing and painting. She served as President of the Widow and Widowers Club prior to her second marriage. In her later years she had the opportunity to travel to Hawaii, New England States, Niagara Falls, and Canada. She enjoyed her loving little bundle of joy, Priscilla, her Chihuahua.
Mary was preceded in death by her first husband William (Bill) Durden Austin Sr., her parents John E. Stringer Sr. and Agnes Colding Stringer, her siblings John (Jack) E. Stringer, Jr., Dorothy (Dot) Hardy Rice, and Jeanette C. Stringer.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Ryan Newton, Kyle Williams, Kurt Williams, John Ducey, Austin Ducey, Korey Austin, Chad Austin, and Will Austin.
Memorials may be made to the Hill Baptist Church, 2165 Kings Way, Augusta, GA or to the Patchin and Weston Endowment in care of University Health Care Foundation, 2100 Central Avenue, Suite D-1, Augusta, GA to assist the needs of those battling a serious illness such as cancer, as two of her siblings had cancer.
