Augusta, GA – Melinda Cowart Overstreet was called to heaven on March 29th, 2022. As we are told in Romans -15:13” May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Melinda was born January 15, 1941 in Millen, Georgia, the daughter of Rowena Gay Cowart and John Cowart. Melinda attended Georgia Southern where she received her degree in Elementary Education. Melinda began her career as a First Grade Teacher and spent the majority of her career at Wilkinson Gardens Elementary School in Augusta, Georgia. Melinda officially retired after 32 years but her love for children kept her substitute teaching for an additional ten years at Hill Crest Baptist Church and working as a day care provider for the Mother’s Day Out program at First Baptist Church. Melinda was also a member of Fleming Baptist Church and attended the Catherine W. Newman Sunday School class. Melinda loved watching the Braves, spending time with her dog, Hairy, and cooking for family and friends. Melinda was a kind, gentle soul who would help in any way she could.
Melinda is survived by her son Chris Overstreet and his wife December; son John Overstreet; grandchildren: Kirsten Overstreet, Dakota Kelly and his wife Olivia, and Caitlin Kelly; great grandchildren: Madison and Lincoln Kelly.
She is preceded in death by her husband: Charles Overstreet; mother: Rowena Cowart; father: John Cowart; sister: Sue Green and her husband Bill Green and niece: Teri Johnston.
Melinda was also beloved by nephew: Rex Bailey and his wife Kim; grandnephews: Nick and Luke Bailey and grandnieces: Emma and Caroline Johnston.
The service and visitation will be held at Thomas Poteet & Sons, 214 Davis Rd, Augusta, GA. Visitation will be on Monday April 4, 2022, 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Service will be on Tuesday, 4/5/2022 at 11 a.m. Graveside services will follow at Elam Baptist Church Cemetery, 5199 Elam Rd, Millen, GA on April 5, 2022 at 2:00 p.m.
