Evans, GA - Merle Marian McGrath passed into the loving arms of the Lord on Friday, April 3, 2009.
A 13 year resident of Augusta, Georgia, she was born Merle Marian Toppe in Algoma, Wisconsin in 1915. Early in life, she taught elementary school and later moved to Miami, Florida to pursue a career as an executive secretary for an oil corporation. Shortly after World War II, she met & married William John McGrath in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Following William's career as an officer in the US Army, they moved to Charleston, SC where they resided for 34 years. Ms. McGrath was a homemaker raising a family & active in her church community. A member of John Wesley Methodist Church, she also was a member of the Leslie Westbury Circle.
She is predeceased by her husband of 42 years, William. Survivors include daughter, Jeannine McGrath Eckert (Chris) of Augusta and son, William John McGrath III (Linda) of Boise, Idaho. Grandchildren include Jennifer Marie Eckert of Augusta, GA., Christopher Charles Eckert of Ft. Sill, OK., Courtney Rae McGrath and Carson William McGrath of San Diego, CA.
Ms. McGrath was a member of Wesley Methodist Church in Evans, GA.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity Center for Hospice, 2260 Wrightsboro Road, Augusta, GA 30904 or to Wesley United Methodist Church Building Fund,
A Memorial Service will be held in the Wesley Gardens at Wesley United Methodist Church, 825, N. Belair Road, at 5:00 PM on Tuesday, April 7, 2009.
A private burial service will be held in Beaufort, South Carolina later.
