Michael B. Leonard
Augusta, GA – Michael Bernard Leonard entered into rest on Sunday, April 1, 2018 at the age of 73.
Mr. Leonard was a lifelong resident of Augusta, graduating from Aquinas High School in 1962. He worked most of his life in the music business. A talented musician, he played bass guitar in several local bands, including Roy Smith & the Soul Seekers, The Georgia Prophets, Georgia’s Best, and Friends. In the early years of their rise to International fame, Michael B. also enjoyed traveling with The Allman Brothers Band as an agent representative with Beach Club Promotions. Mr. Leonard was also a manager and promoter of musical artists, including the late singer-songwriter Larry Jon Wilson. During the 1970’s, Mr. Leonard earned the title as Augusta’s “King of Rock and Roll”, establishing several popular sell-out concert series and booking top-name artists in many venues, one of the most memorable being a former racetrack located on Fury’s Ferry Road which became known as “Rock and Roll Park”. Mr. Leonard proudly served as an original member of the Augusta-Richmond County Coliseum Authority. He also enjoyed a successful sales career with Aarbour Pool Company of Augusta.
Survivors include a daughter: Lisa McGlaun (Todd); sister: Virginia L. House of Asheville, NC; grandchildren: Gabriella Lee Leonard, Aidan Trace Leonard, Derek Kaufman, Daniel Kaufman, Natashia Hunter and Ethan McGlaun. He was preceded in death by his beloved son: Michael Casey Leonard; step-son Lee Laurence, to whom he was a devoted step-father. He instilled in both Casey and Lee an abiding love of and appreciation for music of all genres. Also predeceasing him are his brother, Leo Leonard and Tommy Leonard; his sister: Jane L. Sullivan; and his parents: H. Bernard and June Swedenburg Leonard.
Mr. Leonard was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
Sincere appreciation is due his nephew, Paul Sullivan, who lovinghly attended to his Uncle Michael’s nursing care placement and other personal needs as his health declined.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at Magnolia Cemetery in Augusta. Pallbearers will be Tommy Brittingham, Randy Butler, Alan Cooke, David Fletcher, Joe McMahon and Norton Wade.
