Mrs. Herman was extremely proud of her heritage as a native Augustan having been reared in Augusta’s historic Pinch Gut area. She was a graduate of Tubman High School and was a graduate of the University Hospital Barrett School of Nursing. She often liked to reminisce saying, “I became a nurse about the time penicillin was discovered!”
Many friends knew her as an accomplished organist who enjoyed playing music for them and inspiring her friends with her gift of music. In addition to her music, her hobbies included tending her flower garden and telling stories of Augusta history. She was especially devoted to her neighbors, Henry and Sue Harry, who were so helpful to her. She was a member of St Mary on-the-Hill Catholic Church for more than 60 years, and volunteered as a Pink Lady at St Joseph Hospital earning the coveted 1,000 hour pin for her service. She was active in the Mothers’ Club of Boys Catholic High School and served as President of the Mothers’ Club of Aquinas High School. In 2006 she was recognized by the Irish American Heritage Society as the matriarch of the Mildred Herman Irish Family of the Year. Mrs. Herman’s very favorite event was her annual gathering of the Herman clan each Christmas at “Grandmother GG’s” beloved Malvern Lane home as she enjoyed hosting an old fashion southern Christmas dinner complete with gala carol singing.
