Mrs. Martha W. Mitchell

Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Sunday, July 20, 2014 at The Place in Martinez, Mrs. Martha Whilden Mitchell, 79, wife of William “Billy” M. Mitchell, Sr.
Mrs. Mitchell was a native and lifelong resident of Augusta. She was a graduate of Mt. St. Joseph Academy where she was the Salutatorian of the Class of 1952. Mrs. Mitchell graduated from St. Joseph’s Nursing School and attended the University of Georgia. She was a registered nurse with St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens, VA Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Augusta and was the school nurse at Westside High School; she taught at A.R. Johnson Health Professions High School. Mrs. Mitchell was a member of AMDOES, Richmond County Retired Educators Association, and was a life member of Georgia Retired Educators Association. She was a past president of the following organizations, Senior Class of Mount St. Joseph’s, Houghton School PTA, the Georgia School Nurses Association, as well as the AMDOES. In 1978, the Westside High School Yearbook was dedicated in her honor; Mrs. Mitchell was named Georgia State School Nurse of the Year in 1980. She was a member of the Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
Family members in addition to her husband include sons and their wives: William M. Mitchell, Jr. and Carol of Charleston, SC. Craig S. Mitchell and Lisa of Augusta, Kevin M. Mitchell and Kelly of Lilburn, Brian R. Mitchell and Shawn of Savannah; sister: Elizabeth W. Hollo (Richt) of Chelsea, MI; brother: William C. Whilden (Diane) of Trussville, AL; grandchildren: Mary Beth Mitchell Taraska (Dave) Amelia Barnes, David Barnes, Mary Ashlyn Barnes Theide(Ryan) Madeline Mitchell, Maxwell Mitchell, Jennifer Mitchell Rose(Joseph) Chelsea Mitchell, Madison Mitchell, Tyler Mitchell, and Connor Mitchell; great-grandchildren: Cohen Rose and Ephraim Rose; son-in-law: Gerald Barnes and daughter-in-law: Janis Mitchell. She was preceded in death by her daughter: Autumn “Sissy” Barnes; her parents: Chafee and Dorothy Whilden; and her sister: Anne C. Whilden.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at 12:15 P.M. at the Church of the Most Holy Trinity with Fr. Jacek Schuster and Fr. Mike Ingram co-celebrant. Pallbearers will be David Barnes, Maxwell Mitchell, Tyler Mitchell, Connor Mitchell, David Claffey, Jimmy Claffey, and Pete Claffey. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park.

A Rosary service will be Tuesday evening at 7:00 and family will receive friends until 9:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
