Myrtle Gibbons Porter
Evans, GA – Myrtle Gibbons Porter, 96, passed away at NHC HealthCare, North Augusta, SC on December 16, 2017.
“Mert” was born on March 20, 1921 in Turbeville, SC and moved to Columbia at an early age. She was the daughter of George F. Gibbons and Elma Coker Gibbons and was predeceased by her parents; her first husband, Charles H. Moore, who was killed in World War II; her second husband, Charles A. Porter; four siblings, and a grandson, Allen Porter.
She was a graduate of Columbia High School and was employed by Southern Bell for several years and later by Noland Plumbing and Electric Company for 20 years until her retirement in 1985.
Mert was a faithful member of Edgewood Methodist Church (which later became St. James United Methodist Church) for 80 plus years. She was a choir member for several years and enjoyed working with Meals on Wheels as well as being a member of United Methodist Women, the Morning Glory group and Young at Heart.
She is survived by her sons; Chuck Moore and wife, Laurie, of Evans, GA; Greg Porter and wife, Gabbie, of Isle of Palms, SC; Mark Porter and wife, Dee of Pooler, GA; a special niece, Dale Piotrowski of Merritt Island, FL; five grandsons, one granddaughter, one great-granddaughter; a brother, Frank Gibbons of Greenville, SC; and numerous other nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at St. James United Methodist church, 3390 Pine Belt Road, Columbia, SC from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M., immediately followed by a Celebration of Life service officiated by Rev. Sandie Stillinger. Interment of ashes will follow at Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens, 2603 Two Notch Road, Columbia, SC.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels Program, Senior Resources, 2817 Millwood Avenue. Columbia, SC 29205.
