N. Max Hicks
Augusta, GA – Mr. N. Max Hicks, 77, husband of the late Mrs. Gayle Pittman Hicks, entered into rest Wednesday, April 12, 2017, surrounded by his family.
Mr. Hicks was born in Shelby, North Carolina in January of 1940. Max spent his life’s professional work as a Licensed Professional Engineer. He was the first Director of Augusta-Richmond County Utilities Department as well as the last General Superintendent of the City of Augusta Waterworks. He was proud to be a partner at ZEL (Zimmerman Evans & Leopold) Engineers of Augusta, GA. He started his public service as the Public Works Director and City Engineer of Toccoa, GA. His life’s professional work was its own reward, and he was honored when the N. Max Hicks Water Treatment Plant was named for him.
He spent more than forty years serving the Lord as a Progressive Primitive Baptist Minister. He entered into rest serving as the Pastor of The First Primitive Baptist Church (Augusta, GA). His prior pastoral service was at the Swainsboro Primitive Baptist Church (Swainsboro, GA) and Augusta Primitive Baptist Church (Augusta, GA). He loved his congregations and it was his great pleasure to serve the Lord and share His love with those who came to seek comfort and fellowship in Christ.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Gayle Pittman Hicks. Between them, they had seven children and were blessed with numerous grand and great grandchildren. Daughters: Mary Johnson (Glen), Lynn Phillips (Jim), and Tracy Hanna (Charles) and sons: Bill Hicks, Jimmy Hicks (Young), Marc Lindskog and Noah Hicks (Heather Hahn); grandchildren: Ashley Bagwell (Josh), Michael Johnson, Jeremy Griffy (Canaan), Lauren Neff (Josh), Jimmy Phillips, Dominique Phillips, Kelly Hicks, Charlotte Hanna, Ann Hicks, Sarah Hicks and Naomi Matthusen; great grandchildren: Caleb Dillon, Rylee Dillon, Alexis Bagwell, Amelia Bagwell, Allyson Johnson, Ava Griffy, Addie Griffy and Andrew Neff.
Throughout his life, Max enjoyed the company of friends and family. His last four years were spent with his dear friend Su Reynolds.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, April 15, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. in the Chapel at Thomas Poteet & Son with Elder Keith Hamilton officiating.
