Nancy H Padgett
12-16-1933 to 06-27-2016
Augusta, GA-Nancy (Roxana) Hunter Padgett died on June 27, 2016 at the home of her daughter in Augusta, GA after recently declining health.
The daughter of Dr. Howard Louis Hunter and Roxana Eaton Hunter, she was born in Anderson, SC on December 16, 1933, and lived most of her early life in Clemson, SC. She graduated from Calhoun-Clemson High School and attended Winthrop University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Music. Subsequently she attended Columbia University Teachers’ College in New York, and earned a master’s degree in Music Education.
On returning to SC she married and began a family, living in Charleston, Columbia, Aiken and Chapel Hill, NC before permanently settling in Columbia. There she earned a master’s degree in Special Education at the University of SC and taught in public schools for several years, focusing on reading problems in children.
After her children had grown she once again returned to the University of SC, and earned a master’s degree in Social Work. Her final professional role was working as a community-based social worker, focusing on the needs of the elderly and issues of women and children.
Throughout her life, next to her family, her greatest love was literature. Her favorite activity was reading and her favorite companion a book. This passion was so central to her being that she was seldom seen without a book.
She is survived by her children, who were the joys of her life, James Earl III, Robert Hunter (wife Holly) and daughter, Roxane Langford Padgett. She is also survived by her two beloved grandchildren, Hannah Belle and Abigail Hunter Padgett, one treasured brother Dr. Robert Eaton Hunter (wife Mary), two nephews and a niece.
The family would like to express a special debt of gratitude for the care and companionship provided by Ms. Mozell Dawson, Ms. Gennie Harris of Res-Care, Dr. Doris Tummillo and Nurse April of Augusta Cardiology, and the entire team at Heartland Hospice in Augusta, GA.
At Nancy’s request, there will be no formal memorial service now but rather a celebration of her life at the family home in the mountains of NC at a later date.
If desired, bequests in her memory can be made to the Dr. Howard L. Hunter Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Clemson University Foundation, P.O. Box 1889, Clemson, SC 29633
