Nell Ray Key

Mrs. Nell Ray Key, wife of the late William Ollie Key, went to her eternal home on Tuesday, January 5, 2021. She entered into rest peacefully in her sleep in her own bed and in her own home, just as she desired.

Family members include her three sons: William Ollie Key, Jr. (Jan), James Ray Key (Tim), and David Warren Key; her one granddaughter, Katherine Anne Key; her five grandsons: William Ollie Key, III (Britt), Andrew Wilson Key, Preston Ray Key, James Ray Key, Jr. (Tara), and David Warren Key, Jr.; and her great grandchildren: Bella Waters and Ryker Waters.

The family would like to thank very dear friends - Cecelia Thompkins, Helen Mathis, and Helen Wright- whose loving care and attention during her final years ensured her comfort and well-being.

Mrs. Key was a graduate of the Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, Georgia, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education. She later attended the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, where she received her Master’s in Religious Education degree.

She was working as the Youth Director at the First Baptist Church in Columbus, Georgia when she met her future husband. They were married in 1957 and enjoyed fifty-seven years of devoted life together until the time of her husband’s death.

They moved to Augusta, Georgia in 1961 and lived there happily for the duration of their lives. Mrs. Key was very active in the First Baptist Church of Augusta, Georgia where she served as WMU President, taught Sunday School classes, worked on numerous church committees, and rocked babies in the church nursery. She was also a member of, and enjoyed her time with, the “Gracious Ladies of Georgia” organization.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and a devoted and loyal friend who will be fondly remembered and forever cherished.

On Friday, January 8, 2021, her casket will roll down the center aisle in the Sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Augusta, Georgia, for her final visit to her beloved Church. Due to the recent spike in coronavirus infections, the funeral service will be a private family affair. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Augusta, Georgia.
