Norman George Statham

Augusta, GA – Norman George Statham of Augusta died peacefully on Sunday, May 31, 2009 after a brief illness. He was the beloved and devoted husband of Barbara Burch Statham, who preceded him in death. They were married for 54 years.
A native of Atlanta, Norman was the son of Richmond Ward Statham and Clifford George (Dove) Statham. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Richard Ward Statham and Clifford Gordon Statham, and his niece, Barbie Hawes Ray.
Mr. Statham was a graduate of Boys High in Atlanta and the Georgia Institute of Technology. He received an MBA degree from the University of Chicago.
For thirteen years, Mr. Statham served with honor and distinction as a pilot in the United States Air Force and rose to the rank of Major. He was a veteran of World War II and was one of the pilots who dropped paratroopers over Normandy on D-Day, his 24th birthday.
Following his military service, he was employed by Shell Oil Company for 27 years as US Compensation Manager. He retired in 1980 and relocated with Barbara to Augusta.
He is survived by a nephew, Gordon Ward Statham of Nashville, TN, and a niece, Cindy Statham Boyer and her children, , Eric, Ashley and Rachel all of Nashville, TN. He is also survived by a niece, Christy Hawes Brown (Tom) and a nephew, Richard E. Hawes, III (Karen) of Thomson and a sister-in-law, Jane Burch Hawes of Augusta.
A memorial service will be conducted on Thursday, June 4, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son. The family will receive friends Thursday morning from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to a charity of your choice in Mr. Statham’s memory.
