Owen O’Connor Schweers, Jr.

Owen O’Connor Schweers, Jr. was born December 24, 1937 in Augusta, Georgia to Owen O’Connor and Helen Mulherin Schweers, Sr. He passed away at home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, March 19, 2025. He attended Sacred Heart Grammar School and Boys Catholic High School in Augusta, Georgia and was a lifelong Catholic. After succeeding as an all-state and regional football player in high school, he was awarded a football scholarship to Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.

He worked for Union Camp as a plant superintendent, Duro Bag as a plant manager, Gulf States Plastics as a plant manager, Holly Farms Poultry Industries as a packaging director, and Perdue Farms as Director of Packing. He was world renowned for his packaging expertise and won a number of awards, particularly the Best Package in the World from the DuPont Company. His retirement in 2000 allowed him to become more active in St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church in Salisbury, Maryland, where he served in various capacities over the years including participating in the R.C.I.A., liturgy committee, altar server training, Minister to the sick, Eucharistic minister, and a term as Parish Council President. He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus, Salisbury Chapter 3489. One of the things he enjoyed most was helping to take care of the grounds of the parish with his wife, Loveta, until his deteriorating eyesight dictated his retirement.

Owen was very proud of his yard at 425 Pinehurst Avenue and enjoyed working there with Loveta. He loved sharing the yard with family and friends and hosted a pulled pork barbeque every Spring right up until his death.

Owen was preceded in death by his parents, his son: Owen O’Connor Schweers, III, two daughters: Mary Margaret (Peggy) Schweers Jones, and Martha Eileen Schweers. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Loveta Miller Schweers of the home, his sister, Anne Schweers Proctor of Augusta, Georgia and his brother, John Bernard (Ben) Schweers, III and his wife, Denise of Cincinnati, Ohio. He is also survived by his daughters: Kathie Schweers Strauss and her husband, Larry of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Patricia (Trish) Schweers of Baltimore, Maryland, Sheila Schweers Parnell and her husband, Earl of Florence, South Carolina and Lorrie Adams Budinger and her husband, Jason of Mesa, Arizona: sons, Matthew Schweers and his wife Grace of Chesapeake, Virginia, and Mark Ryan Adams of Salisbury, Maryland. Eight grandchildren: Adina Strauss Gadell and her husband Tim of Virginia Beach, Mary Schweers of Wilmington, North Carolina, Megan Schweers Lettieri and her husband Jarrett of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Stefan Schweers of Phoenix, Arizona, Sean Schweers with the Air Force at Osan Airbase, South Korea, Amber Budinger Chappel and her husband Ben of Arizona, Jack Budinger with the Navy in Goose Creek, South Carolina, and Mike Parnell of Florence, South Carolina, and 5 great grandchildren.

Following a wake to be held at the home at 425 Pinehurst Avenue, Salisbury, Maryland (to which all friends and family are invited) on Monday, March 24 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church, 535 Riverside Drive, Salisbury, MD on Tuesday, March 25 at 1:00 p.m. with interment following in Wicomico Memorial Park alongside his son, Owen, III.
