Augusta, GA – Patricia Maguire Conway died on Wednesday, July 1, 2009, after a long battle with cancer. She is survived by her devoted husband Joseph Kingston Conway, whom she loved and admired for 46 years of marriage. She leaves behind three loving children and their spouses: Joseph John Conway of Los Angeles, CA, Michael Patrick and Patti Cooper Conway of St. Louis, MO, Molly Maguire and Jeffery Scott Hogan of Orlando, FL and six grandchildren: Carli Ann Conway, Christian Andrew Conway, Sean Patrick Conway, Julian Patrick Hogan, Joseph Quinn Hogan and Ian Riley Hogan. She is also survived by her brother: Jim Maguire and her twin sisters: Kathleen Maguire and Margaret Maguire MacGregor.
Patricia was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and graduated from St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing. She worked for almost 50 years in public health, mental health, and health care case management. Patricia and her family moved to Augusta in 1989, and those that knew her, fondly recall Patricia’s zest for life and her penchant for living each day as if it were her last. She loved to travel, to cook, and to entertain, throwing lavish New Year’s Eve Parties for friends and relations at her historic home on Henry Street.
Patricia’s special interests included a lifelong dedication to matters of social justice, the treatment of American Indians, and the Girls Scouts of America. Patricia served on the board of the Central Savannah River Council of the Girl Scouts of America for many years and received the Girl Scouts’ Women of Excellence Award in 2007. She was also given an Honorary Membership Award for her support of the African American Association of Augusta. Patricia was also a member of Church of the Most Holy Trinity.
The Funeral Mass will be held Monday, July 6, 2009 at 12:15 P.M. at the Church of the Most Holy Trinity, 811 Telfair St., with Rev. Timothy C. Donahue celebrant. Inurnment will follow later in Holy Cross Cemetery in Milwaukee.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be given in Patricia’s name to the Girl Scouts of America, Central Savannah River Council, 1325 Greene St., Augusta, GA 30901 or the Southwest Indian Foundation, PO Box 86, Gallup, NM 87302-0001.
