Peggy Ann (Bond) Whitehead passed away peacefully at her home on January 3, 2025, with the great love of her life, Jim Whitehead Sr, by her side. She is now pain-free in heaven.
Born in Atlanta, Ga on August 1, 1943, she was the daughter of Thermon and Velma Bond. She was raised with her two younger sisters, Malinda Erwin (Robert) and Kathy Mitchell (Donnie).
Peggy graduated Southwest Dekalb High School in 1961 near the top of her class and voted most athletic. Later she graduated with honors from the Women's College of Georgia, earning a degree in education in 1965. It was during this time that she accepted a blind date with a football player from the University of Georgia, and the rest is history. Peggy and Jim recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary after a great love story, full of travel and adventure.
Peggy and Jim raised three children, Jim Jr (Bridget), Beth Pickett (Keith), and Bo (Ashley) while Peggy taught mathematics at Evans High School. During this time, Peggy was also active in community activities such as bridge clubs and tennis leagues.
Peggy left the teaching profession after 13 years to help Jim Sr start a "small" business, Jim Whitehead Tire and Auto. Together, along with lots of support from family and friends and many great customers, they built this company into what it is today. Peggy was also by Jim's side when he entered the political arena, first as a Columbia County Commissioner and later as a State Senator. Peggy was the silent rock and support through every endeavor her beloved Jim took on.
Peggy and Jim were members of St. James United Methodist Church and later Wesley United Methodist Church.
Peggy is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband and children and the six grandchildren she adored, Miranda LeFevre, Emma Whitehead, Abigail Whitehead, Jackson Pickett, Olivia Pickett, and Emma Grace Pickett, as well as several nieces, nephews, and great friends and neighbors.
The family offers sincerest gratitude to Peggy’s caregivers Lisa Gunter, Eva Gardner, and Elaine Ryans as well as hospice nurse Chris Nettles.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, January 7, 2025 at 2 PM at Wesley United Methodist Church. The family will receive visitors at the church prior to the service beginning at 12:30. The interment is private.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Wesley United Methodist Church or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
