Augusta, GA – Mr. Phillip Morgan Mathis, 66, entered into rest on Monday, October 11, 2021.
Born in Aiken, SC, Phil was a long-time resident of Augusta and was a member of New Hope Worship Center for the Church. In his younger years, Phil owned his own service station and later worked over 20 years with the Augusta Chronicle. After retirement due to his rheumatoid arthritis, he spent a lot of time with his friends and family. Phil had a great sense of humor and always let you know he loved you. Phil was a devoted Georgia Bulldog fan and enjoyed fishing and spending time with his friends at Gooney’s pool hall. There was no question of his love for his children and grandchildren.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Nellie Beatrice Phillips Richards and Milton Walter Mathis, Sr.
He is survived by his children: Clay Mathis (Suzanne), Morgan Mathis and Kyle Mathis (Lani Frost); grandchildren: Caleb Mathis and Madison Williams; fur grandchildren: Groot and Lucille; stepfather: Ken Richards; siblings: Sharon Bennett (Gerry), Walter Mathis (Gail); nephews: Mikell Dodd, Jared Mathis, Chris Bennett; brother-in-law: Bruce Hottle and many other loving family members.
A graveside service will be held Friday, October 15, 2021, at 2:00 P.M. in Magnolia Cemetery with Pastor Reagan Sommers officiating.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:30 until 1:30 P.M. at the funeral home.
