Augusta, GA – Quentin Lejeune Shivers, 96, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, died on December 19, 2016.
Quentin was born on December 7, 1920, in Ruleville, Sunflower County, Mississippi, the first of eight sons born to Columbus and Mamie Shivers.
Named for two of his father’s World War I heroes, Quentin came of age in the cotton fields of the Mississippi Delta during the Great Depression, and as a young man became part of Roosevelt’s New Deal as a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps working to build roads and to preserve forests in Northern California in the 1930s. He joined the U.S. Marines in late 1940 and was assigned to the USS Pennsylvania, the flagship of the Pacific Fleet. When the ship docked at Pearl Harbor in the fall of 1941, he was assigned to command headquarters at the submarine base, where on the morning of his 21st birthday, he survived the Japanese attack.
He spent most of World War II in the Pacific, and in summer1945 was in Guam preparing for an invasion of Japan when the war ended. After the war, he joined fellow marines on the police force in Wilson, North Carolina, where he met Louise Shingleton, whom he married in 1949.
Always doing research and looking toward the future, he became interested in the infant computer industry and joined IBM in 1952. He opened the IBM office in Augusta in 1956 and worked as an engineer until his retirement 35 years later. Until his death, he continued to follow the computer world; he was especially interested in the future of artificial intelligence.
He and Louise raised three children; he enjoyed her wonderful success as a novelist, and the two shared a deep love of the South.
He was preceded in death by Louise, his wife of 65 years; his parents, and six brothers: Edward and Edmond, John Franklin, Kenneth, Wendell Stanley, and Rodney Sterling Shivers. He is survived by his children, Sherrill (Malcolm) Cook, Beth (Larry) Siciliano, and Mark Quentin Shivers, all of Augusta. He is also survived by his grandsons Wallace William Reid of Augusta and Maxim Quentin Siciliano of Atlanta, his brother Lawrence Gilbert Shivers of Penrose, Colorado, his brothers-in-law Roddy and Foy Shingleton and many wonderful relatives, nieces and nephews.
Friends and family are invited to the family home on Tuesday, December 27 between 3 and 8 pm to celebrate his life. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Stantonsburg, North Carolina.
If desired, memorials may be made in his name to the Louise Shingleton Shivers Scholarship for English at Meredith College in Raleigh or to the Shingleton Creative Writing Scholarship at Augusta University.
