Ralph Herndon
Mr. Ralph Herndon, 83, of Evans, Ga. went to be with his Lord and Savior on July 20, 2014. He is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy June Perkins Herndon; his parents, Grady and Catherine Herndon of Clearwater, S.C.; and his brother, John Franklin Herndon of Hephzibah, Georgia. He is survived by his three children: Linda Herndon Bradford and husband Carl; Susan Herndon Stafford Hawes and husband Jesse; Ralph Perkins Herndon and wife Rhonda. His grandsons, Thomas Paul Bradford, Zachary Shaw Bradford, Brian Norris Bradford, Barrett Thomas Stafford, William Lance Herndon, and Lauren Elizabeth Brown. His great grandchildren: Aubrey Claire and Collin Thomas Bradford; Kaden Shaw Bradford; Blake William and Camryn Elizabeth Herndon, and Ethan Brooks Marsh. He is survived by his brother Marvin Herndon and wife Daphne; his sister Margaret Lombardy and husband Jerry; his sister-in-law Franda Herndon, and many nieces and nephews.
He was a member of Pine View Baptist Church. He served as a Deacon. He was a Mason and a member of the Webb Masonic Lodge 166 F and AM. Ralph retired from the Georgia Department of Human Resources with 41 years of service at the Richmond County Health Department. He served as the Chairman of the EMS Division and the Chairman of the Environmental Health Division of the Georgia Public Health Association. Ralph served as the President of the Georgia Association of Community Service Boards and the Chairperson of the Community Service Board of East Central Georgia, Serenity Behavioral Health. He formerly was a member of the Safe Kids Coalition. He was a graduate of the Medical College of Georgia.
Ralph served in the United States Navy from 1950-1954 as a Medical Corpsman on the USS Diachenko during the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Ribbon, United Nation Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
As a dedicated public servant Ralph dedicated 33 years of service to Little League Baseball as a coach, President of GDAA from 2004-2010, and as District Administrator from 1980-2010. He volunteered at the Little League World Series for many years. He had 35 years of service as an athletic official of the Georgia High School Athletic Association.
A funeral service will be Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. in the Chapel at Thomas Poteet & Son with Dr. Michael Davenport officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park with Naval Honors. Pallbearers will be Thomas Paul Bradford, Zachary Shaw Bradford, Brian Norris Bradford, Barrett Thomas Stafford, William Lance Herndon and Jesse Hawes.
