Evans, GA – Entered into rest Thursday, June 18, 2009, at Elmcroft. Ralph A. Porterfield, 90, husband of the late Audrey Marie Porterfield.
Mr. Porterfield was a native of Belmont, Ohio, grew up on a dairy farm in Southeastern Ohio and farmed with his father. He was a WWII veteran of the US Army in the South Pacific. Mr. Porterfield graduated from Ohio State University. He was a professor of Dairy Science at University of Maryland and retired from Ohio State University, Professor Emeritus in Dairy Science. Mr. Porterfield worked with 4H and college students all over Ohio and Maryland. He entered his college teams in international competitions throughout Europe, placing his group first in international competition. He was a cattle judge at several state fairs. In retirement, Mr. Porterfield wrote 11 books of poetry. He was married for 64 years, was a good son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He exemplified the qualities of the people who lived through the Great Depression. He was a simple, frugal, honest, dependable, God-fearing, trustworthy and honorable man.
Family members include his sons: Gary Porterfield (Lynn) of Evans, GA, R. Ira Porterfield (Susan) of Golden, CO; grandchildren: Jamie Porterfield, MD (April), Amy Hattaway (Wayne), Tera Balog (Michael), Laura Anna (Dutch); step-grandchildren: Jordan and Colin Yates; and great-grandchildren: Lauren Porterfield, Leigh Porterfield, Canon Porterfield, Caden Porterfield, Tyler Hattaway and William Hattaway.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, June 21, 2009 at 4:00 P.M. at Overcomer’s Outreach Center, Washington Rd., in Martinez, with Rev. Roger Bennett officiating. The family will greet friends after the service at the Church.
