Major John Edward Thorstad

John E. Thorstad (91), beloved husband for 63 years of Agnes E. Thorstad, entered into rest Saturday, March 28, 2009 at the VA Hospital. Born in Duluth, MN, Mr. Thorstad chose to retire in Augusta in 1961 after proudly serving his country for 25 years in the US Army in both World War II and the Korean War. While in WWII he was involved in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theaters. Among his many commendations were the WWII Victory Medal and the Korean Service Medal.
Mr. Thorstad was a devout Catholic, having converted in 1964. He was an active member of St Mary on the Hill Catholic Church, former member of St Teresa of Avila Catholic Church, a 3rd and 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Grand Knight of Council 677, and served as State Deputy of Georgia in 1978. He loved entertaining and spent many years as a member of the SPEBQSA (barber shop chorus organization). He was active in the Garden City Chorus and a member of the Ageless Four Quartet, singing baritone.
Surviving members of his family, in addition to his wife, are his daughter Sue Anne (Susie) Thorstad of Augusta, and sons and their wives Dennis and Donna Thorstad of Spartanburg, SC, Kenneth and Charlotte Thorstad, and Donald and Dori Thorstad all of Augusta; seven grandchildren Michael Thorstad, Jennifer (Dale) Peeples, Kenneth (Ramie) Thorstad, Michelle (Steve) Smith, Ashley Thorstad, Brian (Kristy) Thorstad, Kevin (Emily) Thorstad and seven great grandchildren.
A vigil service for the deceased will be held Monday evening at 6pm with visitation to follow until 8pm at Thomas Poteet & Son. The funeral mass, celebrating his life, is Tuesday, 2pm at St Mary on the Hill Catholic Church with the Reverend Mark Van Alstine as celebrant. Internment, with full military honors, is at Westover Memorial Park immediately following. Pallbearers are his grandsons, Michael, Kenneth, Brian, Kevin, Steve and Dale. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to Catholic Social Services or the Georgia War Veterans Home.
