Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at his residence, Rev. Cyrus Wesley (C. W.) Edwards, Jr., husband of the late Jacquelyn H. Edwards.
Rev. Edwards was a native of McDuffie County, but had lived in Augusta since the age of 6. He worked at the Augusta Arsenal from August of 1942 to March of 1943, when he entered the U. S. Army. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in England from September 1943 to June of 1944. He went ashore on the beach in Normandy in 1944. He was awarded The Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Wreath, ETO Medal, Good Conduct Medal & others. He was awarded the French Croix de Guerre. He was discharged from the U.S. Army at Fort Gordon on January 13, 1946 and entered business with his father and brother at Edwards Top & Body Works on Reynolds Street. He was licensed to preach in 1953 and entered the full Pastoral Ministry in 1959. He served as Pastor at Grovetown Methodist Charge composed of Grovetown, Philadelphia, Lewis Memorial and Riverview United Methodist Churches; Cokesbury and Mize Memorial United Methodist Churches and retired in June of 1987. His civic activities included being a Charter Member and Chairman of the Augusta/Richmond County Coliseum Authority, Charter Member & Treasurer of Augusta/Richmond County Convention and Visitors Bureau, former member Salvation Army Advisory Board, past President & Chaplain of Augusta Lions Club, past District Governor of Lions International Multiple District 18-F and was recently presented his 50 year service award. He was currently affiliated with Webb Lodge #166 F & AM, Scottish Rite Bodies, American Legion Post 6, Augusta Lions Club, Trustee of the United Methodist Children’s Home in Decatur, GA., Retired Preachers Association, St. Mark United Methodist Church, Hillcreek Property Owners Association, Pleasant View Property Owners Association in Lincolnton and teacher of the French Bible Class at St. Mark United Methodist Church.
Family members include his sons: Ronald A. Edwards (Shirley); Charles W. Edwards (Mary Ellen); Jack F. Edwards (friend, Kay Kelly); daughter: Beverly E. King (friend, Brett McGuire); grandchildren: Marlise Edwards, Christopher Edwards, Lucy Edwards, Samuel Edwards, Aaron Edwards and the late Jamie King; friends: Michael Kelly and Christopher Halford.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 20, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mark United Methodist Church with Rev. Dane Wagner, Rev. Gary Dean, and Rev. Edward Nelson officiating. (Rev. Edwards will lie in state one hour prior to the service) Interment will follow at Westover Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Butch Hall, David Hargrove, Roy Jenkins, Don Rawls, John Flynt, Steve Shepard, Bill Booker and Mark Mattingly. Honorary pallbearers will be: Ministers in the Augusta District – North Georgia Conference, members of the Augusta Lions Club and the French Bible Class.
