Hephzibah, GA – Entered into rest Sunday, June 9, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family and loving wife of 61 years, Marilyn T. Garland, Rev. George L. Garland, Jr. LTC Ret., 81. He was the son of the late George Leslie Garland, Sr. and Glena Johnston Garland of Bangor, ME.

Rev. Garland, native of Bangor, ME, retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the United States Army having served his country for 20 years, including 2 tours in Vietnam. He was a member of Dayspring Baptist Church and formerly served as a minister of music at Hillcrest Baptist Church, as well as several other churches in Augusta, GA. Rev. Garland raised 7 children and was proud when he had family get togethers and could survey his 62 immediate family members of which he was the patriarch. As much as he loved his family, he loved the Lord more. Rev. Garland never wavered from either one.

In addition to his wife, family members include sons: LTC Steven Harold Garland – USA Retired (Yvonne) of Lancaster, KY, DSC Peter George Garland – USN Retired (Dolores) of Augusta, GA, Richard Paul Garland (Gail) of Rome, GA; daughters: Sally Ann Garland Bailey (Blane), Teresa Diann Garland Jeffcoat (Steve), Michelle Desiree Garland Meier (Jon) of Clayton, NC, Rebecca Suzann Garland Moore (Scott); 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; brothers: Charles Dallas Garland, James Everett Garland; sisters: Janice Ruth Garland Whitcomb, Barbara Jean Garland Dobbins. He is preceded in death by his brother Richard Malcolm Garland.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, June 13 at 2:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son with Rev. Ray Smeltzer officiating. Entombment will follow in the Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum.
