Augusta, GA - Peter Letchford, 96, of Sevenoaks, Kent, England, and a long-term resident of Augusta, GA, passed away at his home on December 17, 2013. Peter is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy, his four children and 15 grandchildren.
Peter was born February 16, 1917 to Arthur and Beatrice Letchford and graduated as one of the two “poor boys” from Sevenoaks School (1935). He studied at Oxford University, matriculating with a BA, BMus, ‘42, MA ’45. While a student, he served in the leadership of the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship.
Upon graduation, Peter answered the Lord’s calling and embarked on a steamer bound for South Africa. Working with the Africa Evangelical Fellowship (AEF) and his valued colleague Ginger Wright, he was instrumental in establishing the education system in the northwestern part of Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). Many of his graduates became national leaders at the time of Zambia’s independence in 1964. During his subsequent tenure as Canadian Director with AEF in Toronto, Peter met and married Dorothy in 1960. The happy couple moved to Columbia SC in 1962 where Peter helped establish the Graduate School of Missions at Columbia Bible College. His career continued with Peter serving as pastor at Loudonville Community Church (Albany, NY), General Director of The Hildenborough Evangelistic Trust (England), and finally, as pastoral associate at First Presbyterian Church (Augusta, GA), teaching his last Bible Study class in 2011.
Peter was known for his commitment to God, belief in others, humor, wisdom, intellectual curiosity and compassion.
A memorial service will be held Friday, December 27 at 1 pm at First Presbyterian Church, Augusta. Memorial gifts may be made to the Mukinge Hospital Education Project, a Zambian-run project impacting the grandchildren of those Peter taught.
