Rev. William Sherrell Dunn

Augusta, GA – On Sunday, October 23, 2022, Rev. William Sherrell Dunn, 93, entered into rest. Sherrell (the name he preferred) was the loving husband of Phoebe Dunn for 62 years. Rev. Dunn was a native of Detroit, Michigan but always claimed Tennessee as his home growing up. He was a proud graduate of the University of Tennessee and an avid Volunteer fan. He and Phoebe moved to Augusta 34 years ago. He was a longtime Associate Pastor at Curtis Baptist Church. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. While growing up as a farmer’s son in west Tennessee, Rev. Dunn developed an interest in science and the medical field. After high school, he enrolled at the UT Health Science Center in Memphis, but joined the Navy halfway through and served as part of the medical team in California and Florida during the Korean War. He then returned to school, graduating in 1955 and began work as a Medical Technologist at a hospital in Huntington, WV. Two pivotal events happened in Rev. Dunn’s life during his time in Huntington. First, he gave his life to the Lord and began a lifelong journey as a follower of Christ. Second, he met Phoebe Caldwell and less than six months later, married her. The courtship was brief, but the marriage lasted almost 63 years and positively impacted countless lives over those decades. After they were married, the couple moved to Bradenton, FL, where he worked at a local hospital. Not long afterwards, they moved to Rome, GA, where he became the head of the laboratory at the Battey State Hospital. That team made major contributions to advance the treatment of tuberculosis. During these years, they became active members at West Rome Baptist Church, and it was there that Rev. Dunn felt the Lord’s call on his life to enter full time ministry. He left the medical world and moved his wife and two children to Louisville, KY, to begin studying for the ministry. Rev. Dunn served as the Pastor of the Vernon Baptist Church in Vernon, IN, as Associate Pastor at Dauphin Way Baptist Church in Mobile, AL, eventually returning to West Rome Baptist Church as Minister of Education before concluding his ministry at Curtis Baptist Church. He and Phoebe loved the Lord, loved each other, loved their family, and loved serving in and through the church. That is how he will be best remembered. Family members, in addition to his wife, include his son: Steve Dunn and wife Betsy; daughter: Lisa Weems and husband Andy; and grandchildren; Drew Weems, Rachel Woods (Jeremy), Seth Weems, Caleb Weems, Rebecca Weems, Brent Dunn (Lindsey), Ryan Dunn, Grace Dunn, and Nora Dunn. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ottis and Lorene Dunn, and brother, William Hulon Dunn. The funeral service will be held Saturday, October 29, 2022, at 11:00 A.M. at Curtis Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Sterling officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 A.M., at the church. Interment will follow the service at Westover Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Church Community Ministry at Curtis Baptist Church - a ministry that cares for the people of the community and their physical and spiritual needs - and a passion of Rev. Dunn’s. Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Rd., Augusta, GA 30907 (706) 364-8484. Please sign the guestbook at www.thomaspoteet.com
