Evans, GA – Entered into rest on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at University Hospital, Mr. Richard MacAllister Smith, 69, husband of 47 years to Janet May Smith.

Mr. Smith was born in Greenville, Michigan and grew up in Ypsilanti, MI. He was a graduate of Eastern Michigan University and George Washington University where he received his Masters in Education. He retired from the U.S. Army after 27 years, a veteran of two tours in Vietnam and one tour in Thailand. After retirement from the Army, Mr. Smith worked as the Hospital Administrator for a number of institutions, including Augusta State Medical Prison. He then went on to work for the Columbia County School System as a Special Education Teacher. For the past year, he has been a volunteer at University Hospital, an activity he thoroughly enjoyed. He was also a member of numerous professional organizations throughout his life.

Beloved family members in addition to his wife include his daughter: Kathryn L. Hulbert and her husband Brian of Beaufort, SC; son: Steven M. Smith of Three Rivers, MI; grandchildren: Jeffrey, Bradley, Sarah and Melissa Hulbert, and Ian M. Smith; sister: Mary E. Turner and her husband William of Hillsdale, MI; sister-in-law: Beverly A. Penive and her husband Vaughn; and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial service will be held at a later date and the family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to: Volunteer Board of University Hospital, 1350 Walton Way, Augusta, GA 30901 or to the American Cancer Society, 2607 Commons Blvd., Augusta, GA 30909.
