Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Monday, November 14, 2016, Mrs. Rita Mary Stango Weis, 97, loving wife of 60 years to the late Walter F. Weis.
Mrs. Weis was a native of Philadelphia, PA but has lived in Augusta over 40 years. She was the daughter of the late Carmella and Oreste Stango. Mrs. Weis was a member of St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church. She was a 1940 graduate of Rosemont College and taught chemistry and physics in Philadelphia.
Mrs. Weis was a longtime member of the Board of Directors of Lynndale, Inc, a community support service for people with intellectual disability; Gracewood State School and Hospital; and also received awards for her outstanding volunteer work with St. Joseph’s Hospital Hospice. She established a scholarship at Augusta University for those studying to help people with mental disability.
Mrs. Weis was a Silver Life Master, American Contract Bridge League; Board member of the Augusta Opera Association Guild; and Orchestra Society of Philadelphia. She was a member of the Iris Garden Club and the Georgia Federation of Women’s Club’s for youth education.
Family members include her daughter: Barbara Jane Meyer and husband Charles of Augusta; son: Adrian Christopher Weis of Augusta; 9 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and a brother: Robert Arthur Stango and wife Doris of Cape May, NJ. She is preceded in death by her son, Walter Francis Weis, Jr., MD; brothers: Victor Oreste Stango, MD and Vincent Stango; and her sister: Anna Marie Stango Perricone.
The funeral Mass will be Friday, November 18, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church with Fr. Lou Lindsey celebrant. The family will receive friends following the service in the Parrish Hall. Burial will follow in Westover Memorial Park.
