Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Friday, June 10, 2016, Mr. Robert “Bob” Culp Beckham, 84, loving husband to Susan Beckham.

Mr. Beckham was a native of Darlington County, SC, but has resided in the Augusta area since 1960. Bob graduated from Hartsville High School and was a Deputy Sherriff in Darlington County. He attended the University of SC where he played baseball and basketball. He was drafted into the US Army and was stationed at Fort Riley, KS. After the service, he moved to Atlanta where he worked for Texaco and was transferred to Augusta in 1960. A true entrepreneur, Bob owned and operated several businesses throughout his career, most notably, Beckham Petroleum Company and WGAC Radio. He could regularly be heard saying “Can’t is not in my vocabulary.”

Bob was an avid politico, recruiting and mentoring several local, state and national politicians. He was the Chairman of the Richmond County Republican Party for 6 years before being elected to serve in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1973-1978. Bob was a two-time delegate to the Republican National Convention and in 1976, gave the seconding motion speech to nominate Ronald Reagan. He moved to Columbia County in 1979 where he joined the Columbia County Republican Party Executive Board and remained very active in recruiting and running campaigns until May 2016.

Bob was also involved in the community with civic clubs and organizations. He was involved with Toastmasters. In 1965, he was a founder and president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce in Augusta before joining the Augusta West Rotary Club, where he also served as a past president and was a member for 46 years.

Bob is survived by his wife: Susan; sons: Paul Beckham and wife Lisa, William “Bill” Beckham and wife Kristen; grandchildren: Robert, Charlie and Lanier Beckham, Markie Beckham Rooyakkers and husband Steven, Carter, Dalton, and Kallie Beckham; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends too numerous to count.

The memorial service will be Friday, June 17 at 2:00PM at Lewis Memorial United Methodist Church with Pastor Eddie Bradford officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. A private burial will take place at a later date.
