Brigadier General Robert Thomas Cutting, MD. General Cutting died peacefully at home surrounded by his family Monday, October 1, 2018. He was born on October 28, 1929 in Winchendon, MA, to Leon and Albina (Duquette) Cutting. He graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 1951; Boston University School of Medicine in 1955; and Harvard School of Public Health in 1959.
After a distinguished 27-year Army career, he retired as Commanding General, Eisenhower Army Medical Center, Fort Gordon, GA. He enjoyed a second career as Senior Physician, Savannah River Site, Aiken, SC. Among his many military awards were The John Shaw Billings Award, the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Air Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Commendation Medal, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. He was also the author or co-author of 17 papers in medical literature.
General Cutting earned the rank of Eagle Scout with several Palms in 1945. He served as an Adult Volunteer Leader when his sons were in Scouting and served on the Executive Board and the Advisory Board of the Georgia-Carolina Council for the Boy Scouts of America. He was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, the NESA Outstanding Eagle Scout Award, and the Fleur-de-Lis Award from the Georgia-Carolina Council.
General Cutting was a member of Military Officers Association of America, Military Order of World Wars, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion. He was a 20-year member of St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church and currently of St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Martin’s Parish, Otter River, MA.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Clark Cutting and children, Dr. Mary Elizabeth Cutting of Mason Neck, VA; Jeanne Marie Crowley of Alexandria, VA; Dr. Jonathan Paul Cutting (Mary) of Derwood, MD; Rosemary Cutting Raymonda (David) of Bel Air, MD; Dr. Paul Jerome Cutting (Christine) of Waynesville, NC; Dr. Eileen Marie Manyin (Michael) of Annapolis, MD; and James Joseph Cutting (Petra) of Fairfax Station, VA. Stepchildren are Karen Smith Roberts; Rhonda Duncan Thornton (Alan); Douglas Ronald Duncan, Jr. (Jean); Dr. Alan Milledge Smith (Karen); all of Augusta, and Caroline Duncan Caveney (Scott) of Raleigh, NC; 34 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents, his twin sister, Roberta Cutting Donnelly, his son Christopher John Cutting, his stepdaughter Laura Duncan Ratkus, and the mother of his children, Ann Marie O’Brien Cutting.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church, 4921 Columbia Rd., Grovetown, GA 30813 on Friday, October 5, 2018, at 1 pm. The family will welcome friends after the service in the parish hall. General Cutting will be interred at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
