Robert E. Cook
Augusta, GA – Robert E. “Bob” Cook, 83, of Augusta, Georgia, passed away Sunday, May 4, 2014. Bob was the oldest of three children born in Harriman, Tennessee.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents Rufus E. Cook and Iva (Whitlock) Cook, one sister Emma Melton of Newberry, South Carolina, James Cook of Oxnard, California, and his wife of 58 years, Clara Mae (Wright) Cook of Poplar Springs, Tennessee and by his youngest son Michael Alan Cook, of Valdosta, Georgia.
Robert is survived by his son, Randy Cook and wife Laurie of Martinez, daughter-in-law Leona Cook of Valdosta, Georgia, five grandchildren, Christopher Cook and Jason Cook of Valdosta, Georgia, Ashleigh Cook of Martinez, Georgia, Taylor Cook and his wife Hazel of Augusta, Georgia, and one great granddaughter, Amberlee Cook of Martinez.
Bob proudly served for over 23 years in the United States Army. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1945, at the age of 15. His service included the Second World War, the Korean Conflict, the Cuban Missile Crisis and a tour of duty in Vietnam. Over his career he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Army Commendation medal with oak leaf.
He had a passion for life and his family was foremost. Secondly, came his bowling and his love of the University of Tennessee football. He proudly displayed his Tennessee orange and often joked that he was a Tennessee fan living behind “Enemy Lines”.
For over forty years, Bob was involved with the Augusta Bowling Association, serving as an officer, as President and as a coach to the Exceptional Bowling League, a league for special needs adults and the Young American Bowling Alliance (YABA). In 1993 Bob was inducted into the Augusta Bowling Association Hall Of Fame.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Exceptional Bowling League by way of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, 825 Greene St. Augusta, GA 30901-2233 Make check out to the church, and indicate it is for Exceptional Bowlers.
The funeral, conducted by the Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Home, will be a graveside service at Bellevue Memorial Garden & Chapel Mausoleum on Wednesday May 7, 2014 at 11:00 A.M., 4501 Wrightsboro Rd, Augusta, Georgia 30919, telephone 706-863-2570.
