Martinez, GA - Entered into rest Thursday, April 26, 2018, Robert F. “Bobby” Powell, 83, loving husband of 65 years to Hilda Reece Powell. He was the son of the late Starling E. Powell, Sr. and Emmie R. Powell Mills.
Bobby was an avid hunter and fisherman. He took many fishing trips to Lake Baccarac in Mexico and loved to fish the River at Deep Step. His hunting expeditions took him to Montana, Colorado and Wyoming. He was happiest in the woods or on the water. A love of his was to work crossword puzzles and read. Bobby could read a National Geographic and repeat it word for word afterwards. He was a great cook and would cook meals to feed an army and pack them up for his wife, Hilda to take all over town, earning the meals on wheels title! Bobby’s master skill was as a superior gardener. He could grow any vegetable and his neighbors looked forward to the fruits of his labor every year. He grew the biggest, juiciest most flavorful tomatoes and anybody that went to Johnson’s Grocery on Crawford Avenue raved about them. A favorite pastime during the latter years of his illness was playing solitaire. He had a special name for all the cards. Bobby said one of the things he was most proud of was he won the marble tournament in Augusta at 12 years old and went to New Jersey for a tournament of about 100 boys and he placed second. He was an ex-Marine and was in the Air Force reserves. Bobby was a member of Electrical Union 1579 for over 60 years.
Family members, in addition to his wife include his son: Vincent Gregory Powell (Stacey); daughter: Angela Powell Reasoner (Reno); five grandchildren: Michelle, Andy, Stephen, Robin and Hannah; nine great grandchildren: Austin, Jarad, Carter, Landen, Lilly, Cal, Georgia Lynn, Ensley and Hill; brother: Carl Powell (Doris); sister: Pam M. Chance (Wesley); several nieces and nephews and many friends. Bobby will be missed by his family and friends. He was preceded in death by son: Robert A. Powell and baby: Richard Darryl Powell; one sister: Freda Powell and three brothers: Starling E. Powell, Jr., Neal Mills and Earl Mills, Jr. and his step-father: Earl Mills, Sr.
A memorial service will be Monday, April 30, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son.
