Rev. Robert “Bob” Matthews, Sr.
Hephzibah, GA – Robert Gordon “Bob “ Matthews, Sr “Old Lighting”, 83, born May 16, 1929 in Atlanta, GA died May 2, 2013 at his home.
He worked for Southern Bell & AT&T retiring in 1984 after 36 years of service. He served in the United States Army in Germany. He was a member of the 3rd Army Reserve Rifle Team & participated in the National Rifle matches at Camp Perry, OH.
Rev. Matthews was a retired minister of Southern Methodist Churches serving in Sandersville, GA, North Augusta, SC, Augusta, GA & Hephzibah, GA. He was a member of Richmond Lodge 412 F &AM. Hephzibah serving as Past Master & Chaplain.
He enjoyed the Bar-B-Q lunches as Vice President & Secretary of Hephzibah Agriculture Club. He was the faithful secretary of the Hen Peck Club & served as Chaplain in the Augusta Civitan Club.
Rev. Matthews was preceded in death by his parents Mr.& Mrs. W.B. Matthews. Survivors include: wife of 59 years Anne McElmurray Matthews; sons: Robert G.” Bob” Matthews, Jr. (Tanya) of Hephzibah, GA, W. Bryan Matthews (Rhonda) of Evans, GA; grandsons: Aaron Matthews (Tara), Austin Matthews, Alan Matthews & Carter Matthews; & a niece, nephews & many friends.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 5, 2013 at 3:00 P.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet with Pastor Bryan Matthews & Bob Matthews Jr., officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Southern Methodist Ministers & members of Richmond Lodge 412 F &AM. Private burial will be at Winter – Atkins Cemetery.
