Lexington, Ga.---Robert Jackson Bates Smith, III, husband of Jane Westbrook Smith, died peacefully in his sleep December 13, 2009.

A memorial service will be held at Thomas Poteet & Son, 214 Davis Road, Augusta, on Friday, December 18 at 11 a.m. The Reverend James H. Silcox will officiate.

Rob was born in Augusta, Georgia, on June 4, 1965. He was the son of Kittie-Potter Graham Taylor and Robert Jackson Bates Smith, Jr. He attended Augusta Country Day School and graduated from the Academy of Richmond County. He received his Bachelors degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Georgia in Athens.

Mr. Smith owned and operated Land Design, Inc. in Lexington, Ga. He was an avid outdoorsman and a life long hunter having inherited a natural instinct from his father. He was a member of the Beech Island Agriculture Club.

He was preceded in death by his father The Honorable Robert Jackson Bates Smith, Jr.; his maternal grandparents, Mary Potter Graham and Samuel Thomas Graham, and his paternal grandparents, Mary Willis Smith and Robert Jackson Bates Smith.

He is survived by his wife Jane Westbrook Smith, two sons Robert Graham Smith and Richard Giles Jackson Smith, his daughter London Grace Smith---all of Lexington; his mother Mrs. Henry London Taylor; brother Samuel Thomas Graham Smith, both of Augusta; his sister, Mary-Willis Smith Currier (Mrs. Lan M.) of Stamford, Conn.; six aunts, Harriet Smith Heinemann, Roanoke, Va; Susan Smith Rashid (Mrs. Scott), Estes Park, Colo.; Valerie Graham Schweppe (Mrs. David), Ocala, Fla.; Ashley Smith Wilson, Mary Graham Patterson and Elisabeth Graham all of Augusta; three uncles Michael Willis Smith, Richmond, Va.; Joseph Eve Smith and Henry Lawson Graham both of Augusta; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
