Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Thursday, May 26, 2011, Dr. Robert L. Johnston, 64 of Augusta, GA.
Dr. Johnston was born in Erie, PA, he grew up in Louisville KY, joined the U.S. Air Force in 1963, he earned an Associate’s degree at Jefferson Community College in 1977, a B.S. with honors in 1979 and an MA both in Sociology from the University of Louisville. He earned his PhD (also in Sociology) in 1985 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University. A member of Phi Kappa Phi, Professor Johnston has taught at Augusta State University since 1986 where he won the Richard S. Wallace Distinguished Service Award in 2003 and the Outstanding Teaching Award in 2007.
Family members include daughter: Dana M. Johnston of Louisville, KY, brother: Gary W. Johnston of Louisville, KY, a grandson and countless students, friends, and colleagues. Dr. Johnston was preceded in death by parents Robert E. and Ruth Elaine Johnston.
A memorial service for family, friends, and colleagues will be held Tuesday, May 31, 2:00 P.M. at the Augusta State University Jaguar Student Center.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Augusta State University Foundation for the Robert L. Johnston Memorial Book Scholarship at Augusta State University, 2500 Walton Way, Augusta, GA 30904.
