Augusta, GA – Entered into rest on Tuesday, September 27, 2022, Dr. Robert “Bob” Alton Parrish Jr., 92, loving husband of 68 years to Dorothy Burdashaw Parrish.
Bob was a native and lifelong resident of Augusta, GA. He graduated from Academy of Richmond County and went on to receive A.B. from Mercer University and an M.S. from University of Georgia. He worked as a Pediatric Surgeon at MCG, where he became the first Chief of Pediatric Surgery. During his time, he received the Excellence in Teaching Award and the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award. In 1993, he retired as Professor Emeritus of Surgery and Pediatrics.
Bob was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Society, Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery, Fellow American College of Surgeons, The Georgia Surgical Society, Society for Surgery of the Pulmonary Tract, Southern Surgical Association, Southeastern Surgical Congress, American Trauma Society, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. He was an author of more than forty scientific publications. He was a founding member of Pinetucky Gun Club and the Code 99 Band. In his free time, he enjoyed playing the saxophone, hunting, fishing, and sharing his catch with family and friends.
Bob had been a member of Trinity on the Hill United Methodist Church since he was a child. He was also a member of Adult Couples and Singles Sunday School Class, Sanctuary Choir, Prime Time Singers, Delegate to North Georgia Annual Conference, Church Council, and Staff-Parish Relations Committee.
Family members in addition to his wife include his daughters: Joy Simmons (Jim) and Cindy Center; grandchildren: Erin Wilder (Whit), Bailie Ussery (David), Blake Center (Catherine), and Barrett Center (Samantha); great-grandchildren: Ellie Kate Wilder, Lillie Grace Wilder, Simmons Ussery, and Boyd Ussery; and many loving nieces and nephews and his sister, the late Ann Barnes.
The funeral service will be held Monday, October 3, 2022, at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors with Rev. Dr. Talmadge A. “Joe” Bowden officiating. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Monday from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. prior to the service.
