Rosemary Margarete Walling
Dept. of Corrections Volunteer of the year five years
Augusta, GA – Rosemary Margarete Walling, 84, entered into rest on January 22, 2014. She is survived by her husband Ronald Walling, married 63 years. Rosie was born at home April 25, 1929 in Streator, IL. She was the second of three girls with three brothers. Her brother Richard Conner and sisters Isabel Sopher and Colleen Yacko preceded her in death. Her brothers James Conner and Larry Conner survive her.
Rosie’s memorial Mass will be Saturday, February 01, 2014 at 11:00 am at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church, 1420 Monte Sano Ave in Augusta with Fr. Lou Lindsey. A vigil service will be held Friday evening at 5:30 P.M. at Thomas Poteet and Son and the family will receive friends until 8:00 p.m.
Rosie was a telephone operator for General Tel and AT&T beginning with the wrestling of the cords before electronics to make connections. She led women assembling & shipping plastic toys, and became a legal checker for a large mortgage firm. She was always ready to help with families’ needs to be surrogate Mom or crew mate on a sail (self-crewed) bare boat venture. Without children of her own she reached out to those needing a Mom.
She and Ron became dedicated to the Catholic Cursillo Movement and the Kairos Prison Ministry. This gave her the incentive to become more involved with her own prison ministries; People Who Care (Palliative Care), education, and a mobile Prison library heavily supported by St. Mary OTH parish. The Georgia Dept. of Corrections board signed and presented her with the honor of special volunteer to the Augusta State Medical Prison. Other ministries they shared in were Disciples in Mission and Habitat for Humanity.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Catholic Cursillo or Kairos Prison Ministry (KPMI), 2223 Ruby Drive, Augusta, GA 30906.
