Roy Scarborough, Jr.
Augusta, GA – Roy Scarborough, Jr., 82, passed away peacefully holding the hand of the love of his life, Joyce Knotts Scarborough, on Thursday, November 16, 2017.
Roy was born in Augusta, GA in 1935, to Annie Bessie McCoy Scarborough and Roy Scarborough, Sr. He graduated from the Academy of Richmond County in 1953; and from the University of Georgia in 1956 B.B.A., Insurance Major. He served in the U. S. Army, Air Defense as a 1st Lieutenant from 1957 -1959 and the Army National Guard, Georgia Captain, 1959 to 1965. Roy was a casualty underwriter for The Royal Globe in New York, NY from 1957-1961 and came to work for Sherman & Hemstreet, Inc. in 1961. In 1991 he purchased the insurance operations and it was named, Roy Scarborough & Associates, Inc. and later Meybohm Scarborough Insurance.
Roy married his childhood sweetheart, Joyce Knotts on June 11, 1954. They were devoted to each other and served others for 63 years. They loved their family, their church, friends and making wonderful memories.
Roy served as a deacon for Curtis Baptist Church, trustee for the SBC International Mission Board 1990-1998. He was a Gideon, a past director of Wachovia Bank of Georgia, past president of The Augusta Exchange Club, the Independent Insurance Agents of Augusta and of the Independent Insurance Agents of Georgia. Roy was a past director of Great Augusta Chamber of Commerce, past chairman of the Red Carpet Tour, served on the Board of Governors for the Augusta Country Club and as a trustee of SBC Executive Committee from 2003-2012.
Family members, in addition to his wife, include his son: Timothy Lee Scarborough; daughter: Patricia Scarborough Patchen (Joseph); granddaughters: Jessica Scarborough Owens, Angela Scarborough, Anna Dupeire; great-granddaughter: Lily Joyceanna Masters; sister: Betty Bowman; sister-in-law: Jeanne Knotts; and numerous nieces and nephews whom he absolutely adored. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother: Ostell Scarborough; sister: Dixie Scarborough; grandson: Hunter Scarborough; mother- in-law: Mrs. U.S. Knotts, Sr.; and brother-in-law: Tommy Knotts.
A Celebration of Life service will be Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 3:00 P.M. at Curtis Baptist Church with Dr. Mark Sterling officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of Curtis Baptist Church, members of the Augusta Metro Gideons and the Augusta Exchange Club.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests, memorial contributions be made to The Gideons International, P.O. Box 140800, Nashville, TN 37214-0800.
The family will receive friends following the service in the church welcome center.
