Mr. Rudolph Creech Hayes

Mr. Rudolph Creech Hayes, “Rudy”, passed away at the age of 91 on January 29, 2012 with his family at his side.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel at First Baptist Church with Dr. Gregory DeLoach III officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the chapel at First Baptist. Burial will follow at Little Stevens Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Edgefield, SC.
Mr. Hayes was born to the late Walter Anderson Hayes and Kathleen Hayes Smith on May 23, 1920 in Allendale County, South Carolina. He attended school in Old Ellenton, South Carolina. Rudy started working at the age of 12 and never stopped until retirement. Rudy gave up a full academic scholarship to Wofford College to work and help support his mother. He served his country in World War II for “4 years, 4 months and 20 days” most all of which was spent overseas.
After the war, Rudy worked for General Motors in Ohio and on July 2, 1947, married Mary Bryan from Edgefield, South Carolina. Within a year, they moved south to Augusta and Rudy worked as Assistant Chief Accountant for Georgia Pacific for 34 years. Rudy was active with the United Way and the National Association of Accountants while working for Georgia Pacific and a lifetime member of the Augusta Elks Club. Rudy was a member of First Baptist Church of Augusta since the early 1950’s and was a member of the Crusader’s Class.
Rudy retired from Georgia Pacific at the age of 62. After retirement, his years were filled with many days of pleasure, playing golf and bridge, vegetable gardening, fishing and spending time with his family.
His family will always remember his moral strength, incredible work ethic and the love he had for his family.
Mr. Hayes is survived by Mary Bryan Hayes, his beloved wife of 64 years, his son, Timothy Bryan Hayes of Martinez, and daughter, Cynthia Hayes Plageman of Griffin, Georgia; daughter-in-law, Lisa Dahl Hayes, son-in-law, John Everett Plageman, and grandchildren who affectionately referred to him as “Papa” – Lindsay Hayes Roulusonis (Bob) – Boston, Massachusetts, Timothy “Bryan” Hayes II – Martinez, Jeffrey “Scott” Plageman (Walker) – San Francisco, California, and John “Parker” Plageman – Griffin, Georgia.
Rudy’s family would also like to extend heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the loving and caring nurses – Terrie, Jo An, Anna, Sherry and Sally – and Chaplain Tom from Trinity Hospice and caregiver, Chevelle, whose love, compassion and support were such a blessing and so comforting for all during Rudy’s final days.
Members of the Crusader’s Class from First Baptist Church of Augusta are asked to serve as honorary pall bearers.
